More Than 9 Million Cambodians Registered to Vote in 2021

PHNOM PENH: The National Election Committee has announced that around 9,205,675 Cambodians living in 25 provinces and capitals across the country have registered to vote in 2021, equivalent to 87.94 percent of the total population of voting age.

Based on the results of the 2021 voters list and voters’ registration signed by the Chairman of the National Election Committee, Mr. Prach Chan, on 3 January 2022 and was approved by the National Election Committee (NEC) , more than 9 million people who have already registered to vote, 4,904,825 are women, according to the NEC's official Facebook page.

The NEC has added that the total number of polling stations nationwide was 23,602.

The 5th Commune / District Council Election 2022 will start on 5 June 2022 to elect new councilors to replace the old commune councilors who will finish their term. 1,652 communes to be contested for councillor seats in 2022, under the 5th mandate in the sub-decree dated August 26 and signed by Prime Minister Hun Sen. According to the newly signed sub-decree, the determination of the number of communes for the council election of the fifth mandate was done in accordance with Article 12 of the Law on Commune Administration.

The 1,652 communes for the council elections in 2022 are more than the 1,646 communes under the 4th mandate in 2017. Each commune contains between five and 11 councillor seats.

In the 4th Commune / District Council Election 2017, the CPP won 1,156 communes, the CNRP won 489 communes and 1 commune on Nhek Bun Chhay's Khmer United National Party.

However, after the dissolution of the CNRP by the Supreme Court alleging that the party has conspired with foreigners to overthrow the government, the former CNRP's commune council seats were split by the NEC.
